Valentine’s Day According to Wilder Weir

According to Wikipedia, Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day when lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and sending valentines. While of course most women do enjoy the celebration, but what do men really think of this love holiday?

So I asked my friend Wilder Weir for his perspective on this delicate issue. As the ever-charming host of Oh So Cosmo and a creator of Paddling Bryans – Wilder Weir can talk “guy stuff” with men while still relating to women. With Valentine’s Day just days away, who better to ask about the love holiday than the dynamic duo— Josie Dye and Wilder Weir— who star in Cosmo TV’s popular show Oh So Cosmo that explores everything to do with men, sex, relationships and fashion. And indeed, Wikipedia does define Valentine’s Day as a holiday with its origin dating back 1,500 years! The holiday became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Beginning with a woman’s perspective on Valentine’s Day, Josie Dye is a well known television and radio personality. Josie stars in the television show Oh So Cosmo and also has her own radio show, on 102.1 The Edge. I interviewed Josie while shooting an Oh So Cosmo segment, and here is what she said:

Parisian Chic: A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange

A week ago, I bought the much hyped Parisian Chic: A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange with Sophie Gachet. The book was released in April 2011, and has generated much buzz in the fashion community. Unlike Nina Garcia's books, which are useful and heavily fashion oriented, this book lacked substance. Claiming to reveal the secrets of Parisian chic, this book by author Ines de la Fressange belongs more in France travel section than it does the fashion section.

I appreciate the fascination with Parisian chic — however a beret and a nautical shirt is no revelation. There are a few interesting points but mostly this is a picture book for adults. In total there are about 60 pages out of 230 that are dedicated to fashion, and another 15 to beauty; with the rest mostly based on Paris and its attractions. For a book that claims to be a fashion guide, I am very disappointed given that only 27% focuses on the actual topic.

Rooney Mara & George Clooney

With Oscar-awards season upon us – and some rather uninspiring winter weather – this past weekend I was keen to watch some of the most buzzed about films: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with Rooney Mara, The Descendants with George Clooney, and My Week With Marilyn with Michelle Williams.

Despite the sombre plot, The Descendants unfolds in unexpected ways and is overall positive and inspiring. The film is based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings and tells the story of a distant husband and father who comes to face his wife's infidelity while coming to terms with her upcoming passing. There seems much love these days in Hollywood for George Clooney, and he will likely will win the Oscar for Best Actor for this role. My advice is to definitely watch The Descendants in theatres since the Hawaiian scenery is beautiful and inspiring in the heart of winter, and despite the underlying topic you will surely leave happy!
