Hello Darlings, With Valentine’s Day just days away, who better to ask about the love holiday than the dynamic duo— Josie Dye and Wilder Weir— who star in Cosmo TV’s popular show Oh So Cosmo that explores everything to do with men, sex, relationships and fashion. And indeed, Wikipedia does define Valentine’s Day as a holiday with its origin dating back 1,500 years! The holiday became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Beginning with a woman’s perspective on Valentine’s Day, Josie Dye is a well known television and radio personality. Josie stars in the television show Oh So Cosmo and also has her own radio show, on 102.1 The Edge. I interviewed Josie while shooting an Oh So Cosmo segment, and here is what she said:

Marta: How would you like to spend your Valentine’s Day?

Josie: “With my husband, I haven’t seen him in about 5 months. But I am actually going to visit him in Los Angeles where are going to go to the Grammy’s on Sunday night. As for how I would like to spend Valentine’s Day, I would like to eat whatever it is that I want to eat on that day. Since I typically eat healthy and organic, I would like him to take me out for quarter pounder.”

Marta: So does he have to plan Valentine’s Day, or do you?

Josie: He definitely has to plan it.

Marta: Gifts or no gifts?

Josie: I am all about the gifts. Although everyday should be like Valentine’s Day, it is not. So men should go all out for Valentine’s Day.

Marta: What would you like for Valentine’s Day?

Josie: I would be happy with red roses, a cheeseburger and maybe a little bracelet from Tiffany’s.

Marta: What would you wear?

Josie: You have to wear red. How many days in a year can you actually wear red? Like three: Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and Christmas. You need to wear red and you need to wear a lot of red.

Marta: What to avoid on Valentine’s Day?

Josie: Avoid sappy movies and going out if you’re single. If you’re with someone, then avoid talking to your single friends. You don’t need to bring anyone down on that day.

Marta: So what should a single girl do on Valentine’s Day?

Josie: She should stay at home and watch DVDs. Don’t watch the television because it is all lovey and sappy stuff. Invite over a single friend and drink a lot of wine. It does not have to be depressing like everyone makes it out to be.

Marta: Proposing on Valentine’s Day? Cliché or sweet?

Josiew: Totally cliché. Don’t do it on Valentine’s Day, her birthday or Christmas. Just make it spontaneous and romantic.

This would be so fantastic to win. Now.. re: the interview here. I was interested to read the answer for gifts/no gifts.. I have never been a huge celebrator of valentines, maybe because I listened to so many people say its a fraud to hype up sales of retail stores etc. Maybe on top of that I never thought I needed “gifts” to show me I was loved. BUT more to the point. I think my bigger issue has always been that I feel guilty when I am doted upon and therefore pretend that I don’t need it.. when really I would love to be spoiled rotten and have a guy go all out for valentines.

Great interview, but I will have to disagree with the whole aspect of renting DVDs / drinking wine to cure the supposed “depression” valentines day causes. I think being single in our society is vilified, which makes absolutely no sense at all. I know plenty of women who are incredibly happy with their lives being single and being great people to boot. Life gives you some of the most fulfilling moments based on the effort one puts in and what one does - not who one is with. It’s not a day for single people to not watch the movies and TV shows they like because they are focusing romance and relationships. I think its time to move beyond the stereotype and plan to just live a good life -whether you’re in a relationship or not. :)

Totally agree with Marz. I was so content being single, and never dreamed of moping or being dissatisfied with my status on Valentine’s Day. In fact, I think I was more enthusiastic about the holiday than many of my girlfriends who had boyfriends! :P

I think the notion of love can be appreciated and celebrated by all — just because you aren’t currently experiencing a form of it, doesn’t make the holiday awful.

Great interview! Whether you’re single or with someone on Valentine’s it’s important to have fun! Love Josie’s idea of wearing red. If I were single I’d wear a really fun red dress and invite my best friends over to drink red wine, eat popcorn and watch funny movies.

  5. Tracy says:

chick flicks with girlfriends & wine is a great way to go for singles…

I have to agree with all of the above points from the girlfriend perspective. This was the first time I actually got to spend Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend because we were doing the long distance thing last year. He got me roses and a cute little pair of pjs and chocolates. I agree that it is the girl’s day to get spoiled but I still gave him an array of some of his favourite chocolates because I wanted to make him happy too. We went out for dinner after but instead of doing something super expensive and classy - we went to a BBQ joint and both got pulled pork sandwiches. He was so happy and I loved it too. Great day!

  7. Eleni says:

I think that society has created two reactions to valentine’s day:either you love it or you hate it. You love it because you’re with someone or you hate it because you’re single. In my opinion that’s wrong. I think Valentine’s day should be celebrated by everyone, single or in a relationship. It’s a day for love - not only for couples. Although I do agree that being in a relationship is fun on this day (I mean who doesn’t love being spoiled), I don’t think that girls should have to stay home and watch DVDs with their single friends. There’s nothing wrong with being single on valentine’s day. You can celebrate anyways you would like and shouldn’t have to avoid certain places where you might run into couples. Plus, its also an excuse to splurge on your favorite chocolates ;)
