Weekend in Prince Edward County: Where to Stay, Eat, Wine Taste and Find Art
It was a sunny morning as we packed our bags into Shayla’s car. The summer was still in the air despite it having passed. For years now, Shayla and I have gone on a trip together in the fall. This time, we were en route to Prince Edward County. Not an exotic destination, but one we are so lucky to have nearby. Especially since this was my first holiday since quarantine.
Aside from our annual girls trips, Shayla and I also visit The County once or twice a year. Over time, we’ve decided on the following as our favorite activities and places to stay, eat, and taste wine!
The Drake Devonshire, June Motel or AirBnb?
In the past, we’ve always stayed at The Drake Devonshire or, when with a bigger group, at an AirBnB, loving both options. This time, however, we decided on the June Motel. After all, it’s the most buzzed about PEC property on Instagram, with its bright colours and catchy signs. What appealed to us most though was the fact that we could drive right up to our door and access our room directly. There’s no need to go into a lobby or walk down a hallway and share space with others. The check-in process was non-touch and smooth sailing.
Upon first impression, the space is cute. We both loved having access to the outdoors, the nightly bonfires, and our little seating area. However, given the hefty price tag (about $400/per night at high season), it was far from the luxury that you’d expect. Aside from the stiff sheets and somewhat uncomfortable mattresses, the amenities are limited. For any questions, we were to text the concierge. Aside from that, there was not much access to anything. Granted, this is to be expected from a traditional motel-style property. Still, from a value standpoint, the price during high season is not justified. During the fall and winter, it is much more reasonable.
Ultimately, when it comes to hotels, both Shayla and I agreed that the Drake Devonshire would be our preference, as it does provide more comfort, especially when it comes to bedding. While The June is definitely Instagram worthy, The Drake is more curated.
Overall though, we decided that AirBnb is the way to go when staying in Prince Edward County. This is based on both value and experience. Renting a property on the water, or one with a farm field would be our preferred option.
The County offers a wonderful selection of culinary choices. Aside from the classic stops at The Drake Devonshire restaurant, Norman Hardie for pizza, or Flame & Smith, this time we were keen to explore more options. One thing to note, if you’re used to eating late dinners like we are, is that many businesses close early, including restaurants. Aside from Koenji, most places will close around 9pm. So, do plan accordingly.
Here are some of our favourites:
TerraCello Winery - forever one of my favourite stops in PEC. Their pizza is magical. Arrive early, as they sell out fast. Even when I’m just driving by The County en route to Quebec, I always stop by!
The Vic Cafe - the interior design and concept are incredibly fun. We had our breakfast here every morning.
The Inn at Lake on Mountain and The Miller House - absolutely delicious dinner at The Inn. Across the street is the Miller House, an ideal spot for a drink before dinner. The scenery of both locations is incredible, as they overlook the Bay of Quine 200 feet below.
Bermuda PEC - a delicious lunch spot with amazing nachos and tacos. Very lowkey.
Koenji Whisky Bar - the whisky menu is great, as is their Asian fusion menu. It also closes late.
The Bean Counter - for incredibly delicious and strong coffee.
Going on a tour of wineries is always a personal decision based on taste. Most places are about 15-20 minutes apart, but some are close enough for biking! Aside from wine tours, there are other great places to explore. These are some of our favorites.
Three Dog Winery is a favourite to spend time at. Their backyard is incredible, their wine delicious, the live music perfect, and the dogs roaming around are the cherry on top of the cake. We always bring a Monopoly Deal to play!
FieldBird Cider because their apple and pear cider is beyond delicious. Their tours are done for the season, but be sure to sign up for the next.
Kinsip House of Fine Spirits, aside from a stunning tasting location, their spirits are incredible. I always take home a bottle of Maple Whisky and Juniper’s Wit Gin.
Lighthall Vineyards is a cheese haven for lactose-sensitive folks like me. Go here for their sheep milk cheese! It’s some of the best I’ve tasted. Take a bunch home. While there, be sure to sign up for their cheese and wine tasting. Their wines are excellent as well.
And finally, my personal favourite, Oeno Gallery, which showcases great contemporary art. Be sure to make an appointment for a gallery visit. Otherwise, stop by for a stroll in their sculpture garden. It is a magical walk!
The County is one of my favorite weekend escapes and, aside from wine tasting, it is also beautiful for its nature. Sandbanks provincial park is incredible, as is the surrounding area! Great for runs or biking!
With Love…
