Ai Weiwei, According to What?
Hello Darlings, It is not everyday that an art exhibit challenges our perspective and views on culture and social identity. The works of Ai Weiwei do just that! Arguably one of the most relevant contemporary artists of our time, Ai's works challenge the norm and most importantly represent an honest opinion of an artist. It is not the aesthetics behind the pieces but rather the concept that make them powerful.
Ai Weiwei is a Chinese contemporary artist whose politically charged works have resulted in him being stripped of his passport after being jailed in 2011. Known as the absent artist, Ai cannot leave China and lives under surveillance in his Beijing studio. As a result, works speak his opinion and social media has provided the medium of self expression and an ability to stay connected to the rest of the world.
Please take a moment to watch Ai's exclusive interview with Jian Ghomeshi it will help you understand the importance of his work and himself as a figure representing our times and the legacy that he is creating.
The exhibit According to What? is on a North American tour, and the AGO is its only Canadian stop. The exhibit is open until October 27, 2013 and is definitely worth seeing. I promise that even if you're not into art, this exhibit will definitely make you realize that art comes is all forms and can appeal to everyone!
With Love...
