Setting Goals and Looking Ahead During Quarantine

Nothing can adequately sum up or describe our current state, neither on an individual level nor global. One thing that’s certain is our global community is facing a similar magnitude of uncertainty. It has taken me the last two weeks to truly process our current reality. At first it all seemed too surreal, as if watching a movie unfold on our very own TV screens. It’s not surprising that “Contagion” has become one of the most watched movies on Netflix, aside from the Tiger King series.
To be honest, the last few weeks I have solely focused on keeping TryMus afloat and being as accessible to our clients as I can, while working to adjust my teaching plans for online delivery. Perhaps it’s selfish of me to focus my efforts on work, but my work has also been an anchor of comfort for me. While I am not new to working from home, the current landscape has made it challenging to stay motivated, not just on the work front but with respect to my wellbeing, too. My entire routine has gone out the window.
I decided to write to not only reflect but make a few promises to myself, my way of being accountable. While we weather this storm together, I’d like to focus on finding the little joys in the everyday during this quarantine period.
Cooking Less Indulgently
Taking the time to cook has been one of my greatest joys during this quarantine. I enjoy the process of planning meals, making shopping lists, and finally going out into the real world, even if it’s just to the grocery store to make such limited interactions. I’ve focused on cooking decadent and indulgent dishes that have given me comfort, but are making me feel sluggish. Therefore going forward, I’d like to focus on cooking healthier, and in a much more mindful manner.
Replacing Phone Time with Reading
Somewhere in the throes of all the chaos this year, I have not finished a single book that I have started. Right now, I am reading Three Women by Lisa Taddeo, and not only is it an incredible book, but it also offers a mental escape. I’d like to focus on being mindful of my time spent on the phone and rather add more reading time into the mix. It’s so easy to spend hours on the phone staying in touch with people; my screen time has skyrocketed.
Learning Portuguese
Why not learn another language? My planned trips to Greece, Spain and Portugal are cancelled for the summer, so why not learn a language. I’ve been taking daily Portuguese lessons on Duolingo for the past week. Portugal and Brazil, I’ll be ready for you!
Begin Running
Running has been on my list for years but I’ve always been too intimidated to start. Now that my regular gym routine no longer exists, it seems like a great time to start. Luckily, I live near the waterfront which provides lots of empty space to be outdoors. Also, thankfully, I have a little bit more running guidance these days and very intimidating spreadsheets made up with running plans. So, a few days ago I ordered my first pair of legit running shoes!
Write More
A goal that is always set aside when agency and teaching responsibilities increase, but I’m still trying. I’ve been forcing myself to set aside writing time each week. Even if I sit looking at a screen for an hour without a thought to write, it is better than just always pushing it aside.

If I’ve learned anything from the current economic state, it is the importance of having an emergency personal fund. I am taking the time to educate myself and read more about personal finances while reorganizing my own personal finances. Right now is an ideal time to be looking at regular spendings and finding ways to minimize unnecessary expenses. I am taking this moment to reflect on my financial past while focusing on growing for the future. Especially when it comes to saving and investing. Less consuming and more saving.
These are a few of my personal goals that I hope to focus on during this time of self-isolation. During these uncertain times, a sense of purpose is allowing me to have a sense of normalcy in my life. I’ve always managed anxiety by creating a plan and giving each day a purpose. So, while all of the above might not regularly be considered life-changing gestures, their ability to ground and soothe the mind during such tumultuous times might have us reconsider their significance. I think in today’s landscape it’s important not to underestimate the power of a small change or a small gesture.
