PowerBall: 21 Club

It was a warm evening, one that finally felt like summer! In my boudoir inspired, petal pink jumpsuit and open toed sandals, I made my way to The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. Recognized as Canada’s leading public gallery, The Power Plant is devoted to contemporary visual arts, as well as advancing artistic culture. This the gallery puts into play by providing a facility and professional support for a diverse array of artists. To support these initiatives, The Power Plant hosts an annual avant-garde gala, Power Ball.

Every year the event is re-imagined with a new theme that cleverly showcases the artists’ work. This year, 21 Club, along with presenting sponsor Holt Renfrew, transformed the gallery into an illicit speakeasy, where guests enjoyed a night of revelry and indulgence, by way of immersive artist projects, performances, cocktails and culinary delights. Upon entering the Clerestory, guests became the event’s main attraction through an experiential runway.

At the party, Toronto-based artist Bruno Billio presented an enlarged, immersive version of his Tron209 room, a work that engages spectators with bygone visions of the future by manipulating everyday objects and spaces, using tape and black light. Mexican artist Chelsea Culprit presented a commanding neon installation Tru Bruja (2018), and Max Streicher exhibited awe-inspiring, large-scale, inflatable sculptures, Sleeping Giants. Finally, Canadian artist Sarah Zanchetta invited guests to explore the hidden wonders of Sweet Digs.

It was an unforgettable evening filled with immersive experiences, which celebrated the creative spirit of our city.

With Love…

Marta
