Little White Dress

Hello Darlings, Regardless how we reason with ourselves, wearing black is the safest choice to feel chic. There is something empowering about the look of black in a way that is safe rather than uncomplicated. In the world of monochromatic, black is the dominant player - but monochrome does not mean black.

The majority of my cocktail dresses are black, perhaps because black feels like a natural choice. The little black dress has been gloried for generations and proclaimed as a girl's best friend. In reality, is it? When you consider the likes of Audrey Hepburn who famously wore black to perfection, but in reality craved to disappear from the limelight it makes you wonder. Does black really showcase the best of a woman or creates a safety net? Or worse, makes her disappear in the crowd?

Trust me, I experienced the phenomenon recently in Hollywood where my bare legs seemed the only faint attraction on Oscar night. Wearing black in a sea of black left me feeling invisible, which was the last thing that I wanted after hours getting ready for a special night. For the past few seasons, monochromatic palette has been the trend. Black on black is prominent, but why not try this trend with a twist by wearing an all white look? White is an anonymous hero of the dress department

Last Friday in Montreal, I attended Les Printemps du MAC gala. To prepare for the occasion and avoid the Oscars curse, I spent an afternoon with designer DUY to select a special look. With many couture options, I was looking for something un-complicated. Not something to stand out in the crowd, but just the same something that wouldn't make me disappear either.

So I started asking myself this basic question, is a little black dress really a girl's best friend? Have you ever heard someone say "ooh, look at her wearing a little black dress", probably not. Mission accomplished since I did receive a lot of compliments, and quite a few media took photos and Aldo Shoes even made a video interview. Not really the point to draw such attention, but just the same I wouldn't think black on black monochrome would have been so well received.

With Love...
