On Being High Maintenance
Hello Darlings, High maintenance — the much dreaded description in a woman's world. The name that we are preconditioned to hate, however is it really that bad? Have we placed too much emphasis on a negative aspect of that definition and have lost the true meaning of what it represents. Shall we examine the word itself. Oxford Dictionary defines High Maintenance (adjective) as needing a lot of work to keep in good condition.
In our society whenever a woman dedicates time to herself she is defined as high-maintenance. I've been placed and sealed into that category. At first I saw it as an insult but now I've embraced it. The reason for it is simple — taking care of yourself builds confidence and self respect! Now allow me to explain what I mean.
As Coco Chanel said, " I don't understand how a woman can leave a house without fixing up a little — if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny." I happen to agree with this statement wholeheartedly. I think that no self respecting woman would ever allow herself to face the world looking frumpy. More importantly, she will never allow herself to doubt the person that she is. That self respect comes from confidence.
If being a high-maintenance woman is to take care of yourself and in turn feel confident then sign me up. I am not talking about taking care of yourself externally but more importantly internally. Taking care of your health, growing intellectually and culturally is what defines a woman over time. She is not only beautiful but also intelligent and interesting — qualities that require the time investment.
Nowadays spending time on yourself is seen as being selfish and often times we feel guilty for doing so. Of course anything excessive is not impressive. Also, taking care of yourself should not be seen as a chore but rather a pleasure. One should enjoy to primp their exterior while always educating and expanding their intellect and curiosity for life. All these factors is what makes us feel great. Spending time on yourself is not selfish, it is necessary. It is the best investment that you can make in yourself!
If you like to spend the Saturday morning reading rather than running errands — do so! If you enjoy manicures every Sunday evening — go for it! Work hard but also don't forget to take the time to spoil yourself. If that puts a label on you, then wear it proudly knowing that you're becoming the best woman that you can be! The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.
With Love...
