Washington: Where JFK Proposed to Jackie
Hello Darlings, During Labor Day long weekend, I cheered on E's team at Baltimore's first ever Indy Grand Prix. I loved the city and enjoyed spending my 23rd birthday there. Following the races, E and I spent a few days strolling the streets of Washington and in particular the charming neighborhood of Georgetown.
Unlike the dwarfing corridors of most big cities, Washington skyscrapers are humbly at most of 12-14 stories in height. In 1899, Congress passed the Heights of Building Act which limited building heights in the Capitol, but was amended in 1910 to the width of the adjacent street plus 20 feet. The intent was to not to pollute the landscape with skyscrapers, which went hand in hand with the Jeffersonian vision of Washington as an American version of 18th century Paris, with "low and convenient" housing and "light and airy" streets.

My favorite part of Washington was definitely the Georgetown neighborhood as it not only has a wonderful variety of shopping but also a great selection of cozy cafés and restaurants. As I found Washington downtown to be a disappointment in restaurant selection and a major lack of taxis, Georgetown was a perfect combination of chic and relaxed with a fair selection of eateries. Our favorite place was Paolo's Ristorante where we enjoyed several lunches, and of course for dessert the famous Serendipity 3 for their signature Frozen Hot Chocolate.
On the last day of our trip, by chance we had dinner at Martin's Tavern which has a fascinating history. This 78 year old tavern has been a favorite of many presidents including JFK. In fact, E and I sat in the very booth where JFK proposed to Jackie O. Speaking of chance, this hidden gem is a must see and eat in Washington; you can have your pick to eat at Truman's, JFK's, or Nixon's favorite booth to name a few. History aside, the tavern is very charming and the food is delicious.
The trip was great fun and packing was a breeze as once again I only brought a carry on with two pairs of ballerinas, a pair of sneakers for the race track, a pair of sandals and a two pairs of heels. I also packed four to five blouses, three skirts, few tees, two pairs of pants and two dresses. Just enough variety but without the hassle of a large suitcase.The trip was a combination of fun, romance, and discovering new things together!
