Trends come and go but there’s a select few that become classics. Amongst the little black dresses, a-line skirts, blazers and black pumps is also a sneaker. A sneaker that is traditionally defined to be the blank pump of sports shoes. I am speaking of a tennis shoe and in particular the classic Tretorn Nylite. The very first luxury sports shoe.
Tretorn Nylite an ultimate preppy kid sneaker with an impressive history behind its shoelaces. Since their first release in 1967, Sweden, the shoe took the world by storm along with tennis ace Björn Borg. During the period when Björn Borg’s awesomeness would put Kanye West to shame—both fans of Tretorn— the Nylite’s ruled the shoe world.
In the 1980s the Nylite’s were immortalized by an international best-seller, The Official Preppy Handbook—in fact I did some digging and found an original copy from the 80s, stay tuned for a preppy lesson! It was this tongue-in-cheek humor reference guide to cultural aspects of “preppy” lifestyle that made Tretorns a classic choice.

A preppy at heart, I am quite excited to be sporting my own pair while kicking back and doing some work. As discovered few days ago, they also make for an excellent travel companion. Their luxurious fit and a cuteness factor were perfect for a long flight from Montreal to Tampa. As opposed to ballerinas—my typical choice for travel—which leave me barefoot at the security counter and freezing on the plane; Nylites are cute when paired with an ankle sock and at keeping my footsies cozy.

I would wear them on my summer vacation – if we were to go anywhere, that is – barring that, i would wear them proudly when i go grocery shopping

What nice shoes. I would wear them to school come spring. It is so difficult to find cute shoes that you are also able to walk for half and hour in, but these seem to fit both bills.

I am so excited to move from my hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia to Toronto, Ontario this summer upon graduation. I would be running all over the city – to and from my summer internship – with these little guys.
