What To Pack For Hawaii

Hello Darling, Despite the number of times that I pack and unpack in a month, I am not sure if I will ever master the true art of it. Asking a woman to decide what she’s going to wear days ahead is as unlikely as asking her to decide on one pair of shoes when shopping. While I wholeheartedly love the process of arriving at the airport and checking in my luggage, the struggle of actually getting packed comes with every trip.

As this was my first time visiting Hawaii, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect nor what to pack. Some vacation destinations like Miami require a well thought out wardrobe of summer dresses and heels; while a low key destination like Vieques Island calls for only sandals. In the case of Hawaii, I discovered that it was a combination of both.

What To Pack For Hawaii

Focus on the Destination & Venues

Typically when packing I judge the destination based on the hotel atmosphere and the potential restaurants or lounges that I may want to visit. From there I will check out the images of the venues and try to gauge as to how dressy or casual they may be. For this trip, I was visiting Oahu and Big Island. Both have very different appeals to them. Oahu is an urban oasis while Big Island is a lot more secluded and rural. As for the wardrobe what would work for one would not work for the other.

So in packing for a similar trip, I would suggest striking a good balance between casual and beach ready looks and chic ensembles for evening dinners and cocktails. Personally, I like to pack in a way that can be a happy combination of pieces  to be dressed up or down.

Luggage Limits & Weather Forecast

Prior to deciding what to pack check the weight and luggage size limits for the airline you’ll be flying. Determine if you’ll be bringing one luggage or multiples. I like to bring a large suitcase rather than a few smaller as it is easier to manage. Typically between  my Rockie purse which I use as a carry on, a laptop bag and a luggage that’s all I’ll travel with.

For this trip I brought the largest possible suitcase at 23kg (50lb) and 158cm (62in).  Keep in mind that most airlines flying within US and Canada will charge between $25 and $30 each way when not flying first or business class. Also prior to planning your wardrobe be sure to look into the weather forecast and pack accordingly.

Balance Between Casual & Going Out Wardrobe

What To Pack for Hawaii

For your casual wear I keep it simple and comfortable for day. I like to pack a selection of five to six bikinis for a week long stay. Since I do not have much color in my wardrobe, I love my bikinis bright and bold like this one from Etro.

As a cover up I love maxi dresses as they also look so chic, especially for those long between beach time lunches at the cafe or for a walk, a classic long tee dress such as this one from T by Alexander Wang is always a versatile choice. I love my pleated maxi from Line & Dot, it gives me that glamorous feeling when strolling down the beach and the material gently flows in the wind.

Now for me a pair of white distressed denim shorts are a must,  my favorite for denim is Rag & Bone. Nothing says vacation mode like tiny denim shorts and a pair a sandals or sneakers.

Regardless of the sunshine destination it is always a good idea to bring a light long sleeve tee with you in addition to short sleeve. Long sleeve tops are great for chilly or windy evenings or when you have a burn. I love the striped ones from T by Alexander Wang  and polka dot by Commes des GarconsPlay.

Now a carry all bag is a must and no not for the beach but for everything in between. I use mine as a carry on and a camera bag, therefore be sure to bring one that has lots of space. My favorite is always the Rockie.

I love a crisp cotton shirt-dress! The simplicity of it always gives way for bold accessories. This simple Tomas Maier dress is effortless elegance exemplified!

A beautiful  silk blouse is the easier way to dress up any pair of shorts, skirt and jeans. Plus the fabric is very light and breathable making it perfect for humid evening. The classic white and black look from Joseph will give every look that chic edge.

With every simple look be sure to accessorize it with a fun purse and preferably a small one. This Rebel purse from Jimmy Choo is absolutely gorgeous.

Naturally, not a single night out is complete without a mini skirt like this one from Opening Ceremony. I like to pack a few but dress shorts are also a great substitute or a pair of silk flowing trousers.

Of course, the final touch is the most important as no outfit is complete without shoes! For this trip I packed the above shoes for travel, beach and going out. It’s about finding balance as opposed to bringing too many pair. I traveled in my sneakers and wore them on more active days where lots of walking was required. For the beach I love a pretty leather sandal. As a second option for a casual look nothing replaces my favorite mouse flats. For night out I always pack a pair of neutral and black heels and then decide on additional pairs, if needed. For this trip, two pairs were plenty.
