Hello Darlings,

Today was rainy and it seemed every girl age 2 to 92 wore rubber rain boots. I just don’t understand why women wear rubber rain boots as a fashion statement… even when it’s not raining. It’s as if rain boots are the new Uggs, even worn in winter. What is it about rain boots that women love so much?

Seen today “casual shopping” were three women arguing over a pair of $150 Juicy Couture rain boots…. Why would 20 year old women argue over rubber rain boots? It’s not as if they are Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo. If this wasn’t a “loud” enough indication how much women love rain boots, the price tag designers charge is… Why does rubber cost $150? Just because of the designer name?…

SO WHAT IS IT WITH WOMEN AND RAIN BOOTS????

Not to pass undue judgment… Wet feet suck, but there are options other than wearing rubber  boots. Sure if you live in the country and it’s often muddy, rain boots are practical. But it’s rare to find muddy side walks in the city… Plus, do you wear your rain boots indoors, lets say in an office building, in Starbucks, in a restaurant, or a shopping mall???

The role for rain boots in my life are :

♥  Walking my dog when it is pouring and muddy.
♥  Walk in the country if mud is unavoidable.
♥  At the cottage and out for a walk during or after rain.

Then again I don’t understand why people love Uggs.  My rain boots are Michael Kors duck boots… Nothing cute or pretty, but “uniquely ugly”, water-proof, warm and comfortable.

Fingers crossed that tomorrow is going to be a sunny day.

I wish you all a lovely day!!!
With Love…
Marta

I agree about the rain boots. Don't get it either. They are so ugly!! But your duck boots are not much better sweetheart!

  4. TEXTSTYLES says:

    i love those mk boots!

    *bisous*

  6. sherin says:

Rubber boots usually come in handy when hanging in a muddy park.

I love your substitutes, they look quite cool.

  7. leeselooks says:

yes, MK boots are the best.
    looking good marta!

but after living in NYC for the past 2 weeks where it rained everyday. rain boots – are a MUST!!!!!!!!!!! without a doubt i would rock a pair of hunters, have my shoes in another bag and change at work.
walking blocks and blocks in downpours makes everything from your knees down wet which i experienced!
so i would use them in the city for rain or at the farm or for a muddy walk

    :)

i dont mind rainboots. you are so funny! cute pics!

  9. Sue says:

    I adore rain boots.
I think that they look insanely cute on the right person. if someone is wearing jeans, and an Abercrombie hoodie.. then no, it doesn't look good. but if someone is wearing a cute outfit (like the one that Mary-Kate.. or Ashley.. was wearing in that photo). but I only think they should be worn when it is raining, and not during any other weather. and I don't like pattern ones. I like the old yellow or hunter green or black rubber boots. like country boots. not that fancy ones.

  10. Join the Gossip says:

I have to admit…I like rain boots. Although I don't have a pair of my own. If I did, however, they'd be be all one color =)

  11. K.Line says:

You know, today my husband and I were on College St. (rain threatening) and we saw, like, 12 women in rain boots. My husband commented unfavourably! :-) I really don't get it either. And I walk constantly. I'd rather get wet feet by the end of it than wear rubber.

  12. Katie says:

    i love your 'i get this. . . " illustration! haha, priceless!

  13. Sasha says:

    Hehe, I enjoyed your rant.
I think rainboots are totally acceptable for rainy weather because wet feet are very unpleasant. Uggs, however, I will never understand. They look like space shoes, or Russian 'valinki.'

I <3 your blue cardigan btw. You look lovely in that shade of blue.

soooo if it is raining, what do you suggest people wear when they are walking around all day?
as much as i love fashion, some days function prevails over fashion. I cannot stand wet feet and I'd rather be comfortable.

as the girl above said, your boots are not any better!

Living in Vancouver, it rains constantly. I do own a pair of very chic, classic plaid boots with a buckle, that I wear perhaps 2 or 3 times a year. I'm not a huge fan of wearing them as a fashion statement and typically I wear them when walking my dog. (I loath crocs most of all! – I can't even talk about it)

Your MK boots are super chic and cute. Fight rain in style, right?

Anon 10:19: I am not saying that rain boots are bad nor am I saying that my boots are any better. All that I am saying is why are women obsessing over them now? not before but especially now? All that I am saying is that I don't understand why women wear rain boots from their car to a mall ( aka Ashley Olsen)… that's all, I did not mean to offend anyone, just curiosity. I do understand that they are useful and did say that I would wear but only in certain cases. Everyone is entitled to their opinion….as I am.

  17. Jeanie says:

i think single colored rain boots are cute. hate to get your feet and pants wet? all of those HUGE unavoidable puddles or "lakes" where the road and the curb meet? Many times I've thought to myself that rain boots would come in handy. ESP after heavy snow…all that brown slush? Rain boots would go through it all. But ONLY when it's actually raining HARD, or when the slush will be out after snow.

  18. Wanderlusting says:

Rainboots are just in right now. People like to have their feet dry and warm and comfortable. I couldn't wear your MK boots…in those heels i would slip in the rain. You need stability – least most people do – when it's wet out.

I don't have any rainboots but I would like some since it rains so much in Vancouver. I think they can look really cute and flattering too (the bigger the boots, the smaller your legs look – you don't have that problem though!)

If you are wondering why it's everywhere right now, it's just because it's in. It'll pass and people will still continue to wear them for practical reasons.

  19. noble beeyotch says:

love your rain-boots substitute….much more stylish and wearable than the real thing!!

  20. jm says:

How much walking do you actually do in this city? I could be dead wrong, and if I am I apologize, but you strike me as someone who mostly travels in cars…that's lovely, but not everyone has that privilege. I walk eeeverywhere and I would die without my rain boots!!

  21. ♥ Marta ♥ says:

Jm: Hi, first of all I would like to thank for you comment :)

I do quite a bit of both. When I am in university I walk everywhere, because it is in downtown and driving is frustrating…so I drive and park for the day and then walk around. So I understand the importance of rain boots… I was wondering as to why people wear them from their car to a mall/etc, I find that to be a tad ridiculous. That's why I made Kate Moss and Ashley Olsen comparison… Moss is in mud, Olsen is stepping out of a car. I understand the practical side, but I don't understand as to why they're a trendy thing to wear even if it is not raining…and I've seen that done way too many times.

I did not mean to offend anyone but was just curious as to why they are so popular now.

    Have a wonderful day,

    Marta

Rain boots are no longer just utilitarian. They come in all sizes and styles. Many people wear their rain boots as a fashion statement or accessory. You can find your baisc yellow rain boots, but Kamik rain boots come with hearts and daisies and more. Kamik rain boots are not cheap rain boots, but you get what you pay for – good quality, long lasting and stylish.

  23. JB says:

I find them sexy. Maybe in a fetishy kind of way, but sexy nonetheless.

  24. Elizabeth Gracen says:

I love my Hunter rubber boots. There is something so fun and sexy about them….especially when worn on a sunny day. Perhaps there is some fetishistic element at work. That would explain why some people love them, while others don’t get it.

  25. Lenny says:

Rubber boots (rain boots) do come in great variety, Hunter alone in 10-15 different styles. And as a man I totally agree with Elizabeth Gracen: ‘…especially when worn on a sunny day.’ I might even add ‘or indoors….’ Yeah, there is a fetishistic element in there – and I am the lucky husband of a wife who owns 9 pairs of Hunter boots: originals in black, brown, grey, and fuchsia, a pair of Regent Hurlingham in very berry, 3 pairs of the heeled Lapins in black, espresso and spice plus one pair of the also heeled Lonnie in Café Latte. My wife happily wears them any time and sometimes for 12-15 hours, indoors and outdoors, shopping, visiting, you name it. She truly adores her Hunter boots, and to tell you the truth, so do I. So some people don’t get it – who cares? And why do they care at all about what shoes, boots, sandals or clogs anyone likes to wear? Now there is something I don’t get… ;-)

    • Hi Lenny

      Thanks for the thoughtful response!

Hard to believe that I wrote this story 3 years ago and it still resonates. But your answer is exactly what was intended as the point – to receive some feedback about “why women love rain boots”

      Thanks again for writing.

      Best wishes
      Marta
