Hello Darlings, Happy 1st Day of Summer!!! Just a day before my graduation and on the day of my TV shoot — I visited one of my favorite men, Rob Pizzuti of Exit Salon.  After a trip to Florida and many sunny days spent outside in Toronto, my hair was  showing signs of sun damage. Rob has been my trusted colorist for the past year and he often shares with me latest hair secrets and tricks.

While spending hours in his magic chair, I asked Rob how with sunny days what a girl can do to combat frizz and damage. Here are some of Rob’s fabulous tips on what can a girl do to prevent damage or rescue her hair:

Heat from the sun opens the outer layer in a similar way that a flatiron does, and that allows the rays to penetrate deeper into your hair. Essentially, your hair begins to dry from the inside.

There are hair products that you act as sun block and prevent color from fading.  A hat is always the best protection but it is not always fashionable, so Rob suggests these products to prevent sun damage:

  • Redken Color Extend Sun Solar Screen  that you massage into your hair and scalp to protect against the sun.
  • MoroccanOil is an amazing shield containing 45 SPF. Apply only from eyebrows down as your roots produce sufficient natural oil.

For long hair, a mask can be used regularly instead of conditioner to keep hair from getting dry. Masks are best with hair at shoulder length, which is usually 2-3 years old.

  • For damaged hair, Redken All Soft Heavy Cream with avocado oil is hydrating without adding weight.
  • For processed hair — different from your natural color — use Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner with protein. Be careful with protein products as they can build up and make your hair limp. Most professionals recommend investing in professional versus drug store brands.
  • Recommended professional products: Redken, L’Oreal and Kerastase.

Good tricks if you purchase hair products at the drug store, keep in mind:

  • When  looking for a conditioner or mask, put a drop on top of your hand and rub it in. If it soaks into your skin then it will be absorbed by your hair. If it sits on top or feels waxy, that is what it will do to your hair.
  • Avoid 2 in 1 products since they are like oil and water. Shampoo and conditioner are not made to mix. 2 in 1 products are usually shampoos with a little bit of wax as it is the only way that they can make it work.

Glosses are a great way to keep your hair manageable. You can learn more in this post that I wrote a while ago. Since hair is porous, the drier it is the more it will try to pull the humidity out of the air. If your hair is hydrated, it will not go frizzy.

I AM WEARING: Henry Duarte Suede Blazer // Zara Graphic Linen Tee // Talula Babaton Silk Shorts // Miu Miu Zebra Suede Flats // Kate Spade Little Blaine Satchel // Kate Spade Retro Sunglasses // Marc by Marc Jacobs Big Idea Mirror Watch // Tai Weave Crystal Bracelet

When I visit Rob and his Exit Salon team, I try to look cute and casual. Salon days are usually “my-time” to catch up on celebrity gossip. I also never wear make-up or do my hair before the salon visit, so a simple pony tail and sunglasses are a must :)  If you have any hair requests, please comment below and I will be sure to ask Rob, the next time I see him.

With Love…

Marta

Marta, great and interesting article on how to treat your hair the right way. You red hair totally complements your skine tone, love it. I usually go very comfy to the hair salon as with my thick hair I sit there for at least 3-4 hours :-) . As I have curly/wavy hair by nature I was thinking about getting a chemical sleek treatment. Can you aks your specialist what kinds of cons there are?.

Have a wonderful weekend dear :-)

    • Hi Ani,

      Thank you!

I spoke to the owner of Exit Salon and here is what he had to say on chemical sleek treatments:

“Not a big fan of the chemical “smoothers” or straighter. They are too aggressive with only temporary benefits. (Fyi-The same type of ingredient is used in hair remover) If you really need to or want try one, put yourself in profesional hands. My rule is do your research, start off with the mildest type and never more than 3 times/year. It helps manage but will never give you “straight” hair: – Rob Pizzuti

Hope his advice helps and please so let me know what you decide on doing :)
