Hello Darlings, As I am learning for the first time, decorating is a fun yet frustrating challenge. The past week was my first full-on foray into the world of furniture shopping and decorating, and after visiting about a dozen stores I’ve yet to make my first purchase – and have come to appreciate how similar of a task it is to shopping for a designer purse.

In my mind, the sofa is a statement piece and there is absolutely no way that I can decorate the rest of my living, dining room and kitchen until I first select my new sofa. Since the entire area is an open concept, the entire room needs to flow and transition but without that sofa my week has been a bit challenged as I’ve been serving my dinner on a kitchen counter 😛

As to what possessed me to think that finding a perfect sofa would be easy, I have no idea! Just like a fabulous outfit begins with shoes or a statement purse, so does the sofa set the tone for the rest of the decor. But what I’ve also come to realize, I usually retire my purses after a few seasons; but my new sofa will be there from one season to the next.

With that theory aside, today I have finally narrowed my search to two white leather sectional sofas. With fingers crossed that I don’t change my mind again, I can finally move to decorating other areas.

When investing in pricier additions to my wardrobe, I research and strategize and only after seeing a number of styles do I commit to that one piece. I’ve learned that prior to shopping for an investment piece of furniture, it is best to have a clear idea of what you want – in the same way that you will know what purse you want prior to stepping into a store.

I AM WEARING: Gap Crewneck Pullover // Club Monaco Marianna Jacquard City Shorts // Tai Weave Crystal Bracelet // Marc by Marc Jacobs Big Idea Mirror Watch // Kate Spade Retro Sunglasses // Kate Spade New Bond Street Sawyer Purse // Bravo Browns Leopard Flats

For me Pinterest has been a lifesaver as after hundreds of pinned pictures into Home Sweet Home board, I have finally started My New Place board. Also, do not forget to measure your room and then the respective furniture options to ensure what you see in the store will actually work in your space as you want. Finally, take lots of pictures when out looking at furniture then go over all of the items when you get home, delete the ones you have changed your mind about.

Today is the big day when hopefully I will finally make my first big furniture commitment. Wish me luck 🙂

 With Love…

Couldn’t help but notice you’re furniture shopping in Montreal! Are you moving to this beautiful city, Marta!? How exciting!

      Hi Katherine-Marie,

Yes, I rented a pretty apartment on the mountain downtown since I also have a really fun social media project outside of WithLoveGabrielle that I am managing now 🙂

Montreal is such a pretty city, especially now with all the leaves changing color! And I am loving the bakeries 🙂

Still will be growing WithLoveGabrielle, and going back and forth to Toronto a lot, so should be a very busy fall and winter!

      Excited to meet you!

    Hi Martha,

Other than the look of the sofa, it’s very important to consider the fabric and how much maintenance it will be! High quality leather and good mechanics (if you are getting one that has a leg rest) are both things you need to consider.

On another tangent, where are you doing your shopping that you can still wear shorts? It’s VERY cold in Ottawa! We’re already into pea coats here.

    Take care,

      Hi Jennifer,

In Montreal, and there were a few warm days last week in the 20’s. Not the same in Ottawa?

And thanks for the tips! I decided to go with leather just for that reason since it’s easier to keep clean especially since I want a white (light coloured) sofa.

A bit disappointed though with the selection here though 🙁 I spent so much time visiting so many stores, and only found options that are okay, none that I “have to have”

      Best wishes,

Over some Thanksgiving dinner conversation I have heard that there is a clever way to redecorate if you are on a budget. In case you are interested in something like that.. that way is kijiji. Lots of people are very good to their furniture and when redecorating want to be able to squeeze some money out of their old stuff. I guess you’d have to not care that something was used before you, but with kijiji you always go and check out an item before you buy it anyways so you’d be able to tell if its worth it. 😛

I love my white leather couch, but hate it too. Make sure you get the insurance to fix jean transfers or accidents. It isn’t very forgiving and you can’t ask your friends to take their jeans off when they come
To your house. The other thing is it is tricky with a dog. Aside from those cautions I love it. Just need insurance insurance insurance they place you buy it from should sell it for about 200 bucks for 5 years unlimited fixing. I paid big money for mine to avoid problems And so I was really happy I had it in the end! – Avery

Thanks Avery, yea it has definitely been a challenge maintaining it but still love the way it looks. It’s a good idea on the insurance, thanks for letting me know.
