Hello Darlings,

After a long day of meetings, lectures, essays… I finally had the chance to catch my breathe and relax by the lake. And take my new Michael Kors heels for a walk!

The weather has been beautiful and ideal to visit my favorite patio at Eden Trattoria which has a great view of downtown Toronto, delicious Italian food and I just love glass of Shiraz to unwind! This place is great and I definitely recommend it :)

Today’s outfit is my so called “young professional look” as I had a meeting and wanted to look clean and crisp. Although I typically don’t wear heels to school, I figured these were appropriate as the heel is small and the shoe is delicate. To add a youthful touch and keep the frizz under-control, I decided to add a little side braid. I felt confident and comfortable. However, I admit that in the sea of teeny-tiny jean shorts, rubber flip-flops and tank tops everyone wears at my school… I felt like a preppy freak :P

I am wearing:
Club Monaco Dress Shirt—from Club Monaco, Sherway
Alexander Wang for Gap Trousers—Gap,Yorkdale
Michael Kors “Violet” Heels—Michael Kors, Sherway
Accessories& Beyond Bracelets— from revovleclothing.com
Michael Kors Watch—gift from Andrew
Gustto “Cokera” Purse—from revovleclothing.com

That is when the idea of what is “university appropriate” crossed my mind. Is there a dress code or does anything go? Why is it that going for a meeting with a professor calls for a dressed-up look but when in class, ripped jean shorts are the uniform. No offense, I love ripped-up jeans shorts but out on the beach or in the park. Otherwise, something so casual does not belong in a class room, it shows disrespect. I sometimes wonder how a person wearing a bathing suit-top underneath a tank can feel confident enough to approach a  professor? I can bear tiny jeans shorts, but bikini tops peeking through a tee is a bit bizarre considering that we are in downtown Toronto and the beach is nowhere near.

This is my first summer at university and I have been having a hard time trying to figure out as to how much skin is too much. It is crazy hot outside, but how much skin is appropriate for school? I do not mean to criticize some of my peers but I have seen some outrageous outfits in the past couple of weeks. I am all for flirty and cute during summer, but shouldn’t university be the place where you tone it down? Am I being a bit too uptight?

Once again, I do not mean to offend… but am curious to hear your opinion!!!

What do you wear to school during the summer months?

P.S. My next post will be about “young professional” looks and some ideas as  to what to wear when you’re new to the work-field or interning! I’ve received quite a few requests  and decided to research it!! It is both for men and women….so be sure to check back!!!

Wishing Everyone a lovely day!!!

With Love…

Marta

Love these shoes! My university has a uniform described as “business casual”. They go as far as to only let us wear black, brown or navy shoes.

Some people dress so crazy. My policy is “Wear What You Want” but that’s only interesting when you know the rules and then break them…not if you’re a damn trainwreck!

  3. you seriously look like a million dollars in this outfit. like pure luxury. i freaking adore your shoes.

and as far as “university appropriate” i have NO idea. i went to a state college in atlanta, ga, smack dab in the ghetto. which i loved, but the fashion was oh-so questionable. i worked 40 hours a week, so my two days off were my school days. i took a full course load so i got to school at 8am and finished at 8pm, so i was lucky if i could muster the strength to get out of my pajamas. i know that’s a hideous statement from someone who calls herself a fashionista, but my god i was tired… i am so glad i didn’t have a dress code because i would’ve failed miserably.

  4. Every time I see those pants I cry a little because they look so good on you and I never got a pair. Love the outfit! As far as dressing appropriately for school (which is different than dressing for work), I always preferred to show my style through colors and shapes and interesting accessories rather than skimpy or risque clothing. But I did wear high heels :)

Off course it depends on what you study, but I wouldn’t do the much skin look either, it’s distracting and not very professional :D So no bikini tops or shorts for me at school…
You look very nice, not nerdy or boring, but actually quiet sexy!

I love the look that you’re wearing and yes, its totally UofT chic! I’ve been seeing some pretty crazy outfits downtown as well. I guess because I work at the university now and I’m not longer a student, it really does open your eyes as to what students are wearing. The bikini top incident is just really wrong. Same with too-short-shorts. Your professors are people you need to impress (because you never know when you will need a good letter from them!) and I don’ think that people realize the impact that their choice of dress has on their professors. And trust me, it sounds mean, but professors will stero type you based on your choice of clothing. It’s a very sad reality but if you are thinking of a future in academia, think of a classroom as a place that you are interacting with your future “bosses”. This means no belly tops, bikini tops or bum hanging out.

I can see the buildings where I work. Woot. Love the place where you are, and I know it well.

Umm, I think that when people start wearing super short shorts it’s too much, but I’ve seen people in everything, including pj’s. So I say w/e you feel is too much skin, don’t wear it.

  14. You can never go wrong with the preppy look! And you look adorable! Love these pics of the amazing cityscape!!

I’m still in love with those pants, too. Great look Marta! You’re one of the classiest students I’ve seen on campus, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Hope the course is going well, mine starts July 6. Chemistry… 8:30am labs for 4 hours. Not looking forward to it at all. Bonne chance avec tes examens et papiers!

    Adorable !

Not being too uptight at all!! I agree with everything you said here…anything that could be worn on a beach, should not be worn in a university setting! My weekend wardrobe and school wardrobe are very different – I just feel like I won’t be taken seriously if I’m wearing inappropriate attire.
That crisp, white shirt is beautiful by the way! When I went for my orientation at the art gallery last week, I struggled with what was “appropriate” and what was not. I didn’t feel comfortable wearing my black skinny jeans so I settled on harem pants…but I was disappointed when I found my peers in hoodies, faded light blue jeans, and sneakers!
Anyway, before this gets any longer, just wanted to say you look great, professional, and age appropriate!

You look lovely in this look, though for me it would definitely be too hot for the summer humidity near where I live (I am far too prone to overheating!). I don’t think it matters necessarily how much skin you show as long as it’s done classily. Short shorts look nice if pair with the right top, etc and as long as you still look classy, and of course that’s probably where people differ on opinion. Though the whole bikini top thing is definitely bizarre for my taste.

  19. Andrew says:

    Love it babe!

  20. Jen says:

    Hey,

Love the outfit, thats pretty much my daily look, as I am a “young professional”. Just wondering if you could show us a side view of your shoes, I am trying to fgure out if they are wedges or not?! I love the color and so perfect for summer!

  21. Becca says:

I love this outfit – it is so simple and classy. My masters program started last may – Western had strange intakes for us MLIS folk – so I was going to school full time in summer, I just wore sundresses and flowy skirts with thick strap tanks. As long as you’re not wearing tube tops and hot pants I think you’d be appropriate? You always wear classy clothes so I don’t think you need to be too worried.

I moved to Winnipeg, for a job in a government library. I’m a bit homesick since the closest.. ANYONE that I know is at closest a province away – but I’m working on meeting some people. and you SHOULD absolutely visit PEI. In the summer – it’s so fantastic.
