Hello Darlings,
Every morning, my ritual is to put on my make- up while in bed watching TV and getting my daily dose of caffeine. After, I walk into my closet and dwell on what to wear to the point that I am running late… This morning, I walked in and reached for my pair of knee high boots and a fuzzy jacket. The boots were a predictable choice, but my second reach was for none-other than the fuzzy jacket! To be brutally honest….

… my mom convinced me to get it and I am glad she did! However, the reason why I agreed was they were on sale from $79 for $29.99. And worst case, I figured that it would work well with my Halloween costume. The purchase in my eyes was disposable! At first I was uncomfortable with the idea of wearing something so flashy since my style tends to be more subtle and simple. Then I was uncomfortable with an idea of looking like a plush toy. However, morning after morning I’ve been reaching for this fuzzy (plush or faux-fur whichever you prefer, I call it fuzzy) jacket! As I stood there giggling in my closet at the idea of falling in love with an item I thought was just a one-time thing. I realize at how screwed up this notion is….

…. Disposable Fashion!! Almost like a tissue, use and toss! Then I realized, OMG….I fell into the trap, the same trap I am vehemently opposed to! The idea of, “hey it is on sale, so it’s a total bargain even if I wear it once. It is so cute, why not?” Actually, the jacket is very soft and well made, I was surprised at the quality! But it is the idea that I fell for! It is the idea of disposable is what freaked me out!!!

How screwed up is the idea of disposable fashion:
♥ Trends that appear and disappear within a week. God forbid if you do not follow them, then you are definitely outdated.
♥ Don’t even think of wearing yesterdays trend, you’ll be in a fashion limbo. So what do you do with those items of yesterday. You dispose of them… whether it is in the garbage, back of your closet, or donate.
♥” Never wear the same thing twice!”... oooh so fabulous of a statement, but how stupid of an idea that it is.
♥ Quantity over quality. Why buy one thing when you can buy a million, who cares it is only going to be worn few times.
As I’ve come to realize this, I felt ashamed… I’ve gone too far with this one!!! I couldn’t believe myself….Despite the fact that I do adore the jacket, it is the intention to wear it once maybe twice is what disguised me! It is not the item or the cost, but the idea that bothers me. DISPOSABLE!!!!! You spend your money, no matter how little or how much it is and then you toss it away.

I’ve always been and still am a firm believer in quality over quantity. Classic pieces but with fun and trendy touches. I’ve never supported the fast pace of the fashion world, but believed in recycling the classics to come up with new silhouettes.I’ve never believed in the idea of buy something to wear just once. I hate the idea of disposable and a fact that I went as far as believing in it, freaked me out!!!

Glow Magazine: What trend to you wish would just go away?
Michael Kors: ” Disposable fashion-buying a top for Friday night and throwing it out on Sunday. We’ve taught a whole generation of women to ignore quality and jump on a new trend every 10 seconds; we need to teach them about investment dressing and that jacket and suit aren’t dirty words.” ( Glow, November issue)
I am wearing: Wilfred Nude Cropped Top; H&M Tweed Skirt; H&M Fuzzy Jacket; Calvin Klein Opaque Tights; Marcio Designs for Davids Shoes Thigh High Boots; Gustto Cokera Purse; Diamond Ring courtesy Ice.com Jewelers.
Now, as for the outfit…well, I finally found that perfect tweed skirt
I love it! I must admit, I am pleasantly surprised at how many cute and quality pieces H&M has this season. I love that this skirt can be worn all year around and it creates a very young but classic silhouette. To add a casual touch to the outfit, I settled for a nude cropped top.
What do you think of Disposable Fashion??? DO you Love the idea or Hate it?
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
P.S. This Sunday, I will be featuring a two post collaboration with one of my favorite bloggers , Sarah Klassen from Haute Design. I am very excited as this is a first guest post on With Love…
Wishing you all a beautiful weekend!!!
With Love…
Marta

That was really insightful of you. To actually think about your feeling behind an item of clothing is very crucial to becoming a true fashionista.
Hi hikari,
To be honest, I don’t think that I will ever see myself as a fashionista….I’m just a girl who likes fashion, nothing less or more of that
I think that at times fashion has gone too far, for example disposable fashion, model’s size and etc.
P.S. I have not forgotten about your request, I’ve been overwhelmed with work but I am slowly doing my research and thinking of different ideas
So please do bare with me!
Thanks a million!
Agreed! I hate the idea of disposable fashion because it is truly wasteful. And I’m not talking about money, although that is being wasted as well, but its a waste for the environment when people consume so much and throw it out a minute later. Not many people realize, but the clothes we wear and the things we do (like throwing out everything a day later) has a real and sad impact
Hi Marz,
That is also part of the reason why I hate the idea of disposable clothes, because of its footprint.
I like this post. It’s good to realise that nothing in this world should ever be taken for granted.
I do not like the idea of ‘disposable’ fashion. Not only is the most expensive garment in your closet the one you use only once, it is such a waste of money. Even with my Halloween costumes, I will try and piece it together from things that can be worn separately –or even together, depending– in everyday outfits.
Being in a tight situation right now, I cannot see myself even thinking of buying a garment, just for a one-time use. lol. My dilemma is to figure out which clothes to heartbreakingly (I’ll be done with my drama in a minute
) part with and sell for money…
Hi Cordelia,
I think that nothing should be taken for granted. Clothes are not the most important part in life and sometimes a sacrifice is needed, it is totally understandable.
I love this whole outfit. I run into that problem too. I think a lot of people do the whole quantity over quality thing, but I try to only pick pieces I really love. I also try to take care of them really well =) great post!
xoxo

Hi Fashion Snag,
and care is of course essential!
I think getting quality piece is key to creating a wardrobe that will you serve you a long time
that jacket looks cute on you! I could never pull of all that b/c im small and I would just drown in all that fur lol I was at h&m the other day w/ a friend and I never planned on buying anything. I realized I see so much I like when I dont have that mind set of looking for something lol
Hi Sher,
I think that it is all about proportion…as long as you keep it in proportion to you body then it would definitely work!
I never bough something just to wear it once (except for my wedding gown
, so I never actually gave it a thought…
But this jacket looks great on you! And the skirt is a total catch!
))
You have style, so you’ll look gorgeous in whatever, don’t bother
Hi Nadya,
A wedding dress is a good idea to buy only once! I think that it is one of those purchases that you just completely spoil yourself with
Thank you for your sweet comment!
I totally agree with you, Marta!
I, too, look for quality pieces that I love, no matter the season or reason for purchasing.
When I was younger, I found myself falling into the trend trap far too often that I’d like
to admit, but now, I’m more careful and thoughtful when buying. The odd time, I will
come across something vintage and unique, and will snatch it up. Sometimes it ends up
being one of my favorite pieces — such as my super soft, pink gloves with scalloped
edges! I’m glad that you ended up falling for this furry coat — to me, it’s the perfect
balance with your super chic skirt. (I really, really like that skirt!) Also, the top is super
sweet — right now I’m really impressed with Wilfred. Did you see a layered tank in the
same nude? I had to buy it! You’ve got me thinking of different textures now, based on
your pretty pairing. Thanks for the inspiration + thoughtful post / much needed post!
Have a lovely weekend {xo}
Sarah
Hi Sarah,
It is always a good idea to think ahead!
I am the same way, I can buy cashmere in the summer time, plus when you buy off season you get amazing deals on classics
P.S. I am obsessing over Wilfred nude tops, they are to pretty!
You are completely right about disposable fashion! I usually only buy something that I can see myself wearing many times.
I love your curly hair… and your outfit! You look gorgeous as usual
Thank you
I can’t wait your next post and def quality over quantity
kisses and have a lovely weekend!
Hi Etrapar,
I am really excited for it as well
Quality over quantity always!
Agree whole heartedly. I have champagne tastes. if I buy something it better have excellent quality and be gorgeous (and usually with an original price tag to match unfortunately) so I definitely don’t intend part with it.
Also I went into Forever 21 recently, and after thrifting all of these gorgeously constructed pieces, I just found the craftmanship shabby at F21. I suppose it is only supposed to last a weekend… and I guess I’m also just a little snooty
Hi Erin,
I am not a big fan of F21, the quality is not the best. You’re snotty, there’s nothing wrong with wanting quality!
I love that jacket, a lot.
thank you!
What a great post. I really believe in that as well!! Love the whole ouitfit, it is beautiful.
thank you.
you look so nice as always!
thanks!
I never understand why people have to wear something once or twice just because when they get it, it happens to be part of a trend. If you love it, keep wearing it.
I have no clue, that’s why I was trying to figure out
Awesome skirt <3
thanks
Hey there. Nice post. Happy Sunday. Hope you’ve been enjoying the weekend. Take care. Have a great week ahead. Cheers!
thanks keith, wishing you a wonderful week!
Okhi. I just found your blog and I am in love! As I was shopping yesterday, I noticed that I was the only girl in the store not wearing sweatpants/leggings/jeans with UGGS. I feel refreshed and relieved to see that you’re not wearing them either.
I love your boots annnnd the furry jacket is awesome. I was thinking of buying one yesterday, but, alas I didn’t. Although I am a firm believer in quality over quantity, it’s great to mix fabulous pieces with ones that are just as fabulous but disposable. Sometimes, those pieces really make the outfit. And, if you don’t pay an outrageous amount, then it’s even better.
Hi Julia,
Aww…. thank you! That is so sweet of you!
I know how you feel…Uggs!!!! Whoever created them…uggh
I must say you’re someone I look up to in terms of “quality over quantity”. It seems like most of your pieces have been “remixed”, showing different ways they could be worn. Buying a few “throwaway” items isn’t bad, since you already have your basics down… and besides that fur coat looks amazing!
HI Teresa,
I live by that rule…about 95% of my closet are quality pieces that I see myself wearing definitely for more than one season. I am not a big fan of disposable fashion that is why this idea really freaking me out!
Marta as usual great post and you look cute, love the boots, and you’re more for quality!
Hi Marta,
thanks….
love the tweed skirt with all the black details.
disposable fashion is a personal choice, i for one have the tendency to get on the trend bandwagon a little later in the cycle, so i normally dont end up buying many disposable pieces. And I am pretty careful with my money so i definitely dont throw it on anything that I dont think i am gonna wear much.
Hi Noopur,
It takes me a while to adapt to trends as well, so I am not so quick with the purchases either…it”s a good financial strategy I would say
I personally don’t like disposable fashion, I always think its such a waste! and I get really mad when it rips and tears so easily (but that’s what you get ) so a few statement and long lasting pieces are always more important that how many pieces I actually have
and its so funny I have the exact same ritual in the morning!
Hi Miss Neaira,
I think that quality pieces are much more economical than many pieces that need to be replaced regularly. It’s a waste
I love my morning ritual…I feel like it is a great way to start the day
First off LOVE the first pic! There isn’t really Fall in Southern California so I love seeing Autumn pictures =)
I have mixed feelings as far as the clothing issue. I often buy things when they are cheap thinking oh well if I never wear it again, at least it was heap. I often do that with Forever 21 clothes. I am trying to do that less though now that I have bills haha =)
Hi Leeann,
I am glad you like the picture.
Thank you..autumn in Canada is so beautiful, it is my favorite time of the year…so magical
Personally, I believe in buying one quality piece ( which does not necessarily mean expensive) rather than a few that can be worn only few times. In the long run you’re saving money and looking great. But then again, that is my personal belief.
This is a very good topic, but I suggest you write an article about how to determine whether a purchase is an investment or trash – and not using extreme examples. I admire your ability to purchase pieces that last through endless wears, but how would the rest of us know whether we’re making a big investment or a big mistake? For example, a $300 pair of leather boots by a well-known designer sounds like it checks off everything from your criteria for “investment quality”, but how can we reconcile with the fact it might hurt our feet after actually wearing it outside for 2-3 days? Most stores would not take back worn items.
One can only determine the “investment” after using it for years, and how could a person foresee that?
Hi Marilyn,
That would be a very interesting topic to explore! Personally, when it comes to shoes Michael Kors is my personal favorite, after wearing his shoes for years…I’ve never seen disappointed. I know that when I buy his shoes, they are going to be worn for a while! Personally, I know when I buy something such as a cashmere sweater/scarf I am going to wear them for a while because I adore cashmere. There are certain brands that I trust and willing to spend money and others that I simply won’t. When it comes to quality it is important to close investigate the item. I think that one know thyself’s style and usually can predict what they are going to be wearing for a while. Classic are the best bet. However, I do not believe in spending money that are not in one’s budget. Everything needs to be purchased within reason. Essentially, clothes are never a real investment and that is something that needs to be kept in mind, since there are more important things in life.
Thank you so much for such an interesting comment and idea!
